Jalon Nichols: Morning Joey! I saw this video on instagram and can’t stop laughing. haha I personally was NOT outside. I was def in my house counting pennies.

Jalon Nichols: A possible recession has been on my mind all year, if I’m honest. Trying to future proof my life just in case we get back into another recession. It’s been fun in my head. lol

Jalon Nichols: Do you remember what 2008 was like for you?

Jalon Nichols: I have a habit of doing / making huge life decisions before huge global events. It’s my super power. 2008 I had just graduated from Art School the year before and broke up with my art school boyfriend. So I was jobless and rebuilding my life. PERFECT TIME FOR THAT.
JC: ❤️

Joey Cade: Dude! Similar experience!! When we elected Obama, I was having a baby. And then I couldn't get my job back after paternity leave, so I felt trapped.

Joey Cade: My career was too niche for finding work during the downturn, so I worked to expand my areas of expertise by shifting into new industries my skills would work in.

Joey Cade: Instead of just producing animation & VFX, I learned how to produce inside branding & advertising agencies. That served me well and I landed a higher paying job at an agency (that I hated but again served me well thru the recession).

Jalon Nichols: Omg….perfect timing for that too!

Joey Cade: I mean breaking up with a partner was a genius move I really should have tried that year, too! lol
JN: 😆

Jalon Nichols: I was doing any job I could do while looking for a full time in the film industry. It was TOUGH out here.

Joey Cade: I didn't get divorced for a few more years but that was a great move, too. haha

Joey Cade: It was way tough!! I'm scared about the one coming to hit us as we speak...

Jalon Nichols: Yeah, but a 2 home income would have saved me financial stress. Instead I got adopted by another dog so had another mouth to feed.

Joey Cade: Yeah, but in downturns we need more love in our lives, so spending on a fur baby was a great move!
JN: 😍

Jalon Nichols He found the right sucker, for sure.

JC: ❤️😍

Jalon Nichols: I miss that dude. Maybe I should adopt a dog?

Joey Cade: Definitely. It's always a good time for a new fur baby!!
JN: 🙌🏽

Jalon Nichols: I obviously was broke as hell. I would go to Walmart with $20 and live calculate before going to the register. DIRE.

Jalon Nichols: So of course I expanded my garden already this year. Growing food indoors and outdoors — just to have food always.
JC: 🙌🏻

Jalon Nichols: Very Gone With The Wind around here (in regards to never going hungry again….not the slavery).
JC: 🤣

Jalon Nichols: Just gotta clarify that. lol

Joey Cade: Oddly, now that I've thought about it, I realize I'm basically doing the same as last time. This time I'm focused on adding new skills that are less location-dependent. I'm planning to get a masters or certificate or 2!

Jalon Nichols: Every time I harvest a big harvest I do say “As God Is My Witness, I’ll Never Be Hungry Again!”
JC: 😆

Jalon Nichols:: It really hits when I have a buncha tomatoes in my hands.
JC: 🤣

Jalon Nichols:: That’s a very Black woman thing to do — go back to school in times of uncertainty. The amounts of times I have to talk myself outta getting my Masters — is too many to count.

Jalon Nichols:: If an HBCU had an online Masters program on Black / African American History — I would be on my way to a doctorate right now.

Joey Cade: It's totally a Black Woman thig to do. I think it's YOUR influence that's made me want to get more credentials

Jalon Nichols: Lololol LOOK MOM! I’m an INFLUENCER!

Jalon Nichols: OH! The other thing I did in the middle of the recession was become a home brewer. (SMH) I will NOT be doing that again.

Jalon Nichols: But I have moved to baking all my breads at home — and honestly that’s the same thing. Okay so I’m just already doing the same shit but just more adult.

Jalon Nichols: Cool cool cool.

Joey Cade: Yep, you'll be baking sourdough this time!!

Jalon Nichols It’s just a LOT. And you don’t know if you did everything right until a month later!
JC: 🤢

Joey Cade: I'm glad we've talked out the looming recession already. We ready now!!!

Jalon Nichols:Gotta stay ready so you don’t have to get ready!

Jalon Nichols:With all those educated Black women losing their jobs already this year, I’m not waiting until it comes for me. I wanna be ready for anything (as much as I can be).
